To maximize battery life, we recommend fully charging the battery after each use. Please DO NOT interrupt the battery charging process.
The overall battery life depends to a large extent on proper charging and the depth of discharge per cycle.
Always use a charger suitable for AGM batteries.
BATTERY CARE & GENERAL USER GUIDE
Installation of the battery
- Always have the batteries installed by a trained wheelchair technician. They have the necessary knowledge and tools to correctly and safely install the batteries in your wheelchair.
- Most wheelchairs require two 12-volt batteries. Never mix batteries from different manufacturers, or different types/technologies, or use batteries with different date codes. Never combine Gel-type batteries with AGM-type batteries.
- Always fully charge the batteries before use. Follow the installation and startup instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Charge
- Charge your batteries daily.
- The charger provided with the wheelchair should fully charge the batteries overnight.
- There is no fear of overcharging, as modern ‘smart’ chargers have voltage limits and automatically shut off after completing their full charge.
Proper charge (Basic rules)
- Use the automatic wheelchair manufacturer’s charger for all charging sessions.
- Never use a wet-type charger on Gel or AGM batteries as it may damage the batteries.
- Prolonged periods of discharge affect the battery life. The harder the battery is used, the shorter its lifespan.
- Avoid extremely long discharge periods, and never completely discharge your battery.
- Do not leave your batteries at a low charge level for an extended period. Charge a depleted battery as soon as possible.
- Do not charge your battery at a low charge level without timely and regular full charging.
Storage & Maintenance
- Always store your batteries fully charged.
- Check your stored batteries on a monthly basis and charge them if necessary.
- Fully charged and sealed Gel or AGM batteries retain their charge for more than 6 months; however, they should be charged before use.
- If your wheelchair is not used for more than 2 weeks, charge the batteries fully and disconnect them for storage.
- Avoid storing batteries in excessively hot or cold environments.
